The Nitobe Fellowships for Japanese Social Scientists – “The Nitobe Fellowship Program”

The Nitobe Fellowships for Japanese Social Scientists was an I-House support program initiated with the aim of fostering internationally engaged Japanese social scientists in honor of Inazo Nitobe, who played a pioneering role in academic exchange between Japan and other countries and was a mentor to the founders of I-House.

Over a period of 32 years from 1976 to 2008, the program dispatched 170 carefully selected Japanese fellows to institutions of higher education and research in more than 20 countries around the world. Upon returning to Japan, they have played important roles in various fields such as academia, education, and policy-making, not only in Japan but also overseas. This series focuses on what the fellows have accomplished in their respective fields and how the fellowship impacted on their professional careers, as well as their personal lives.
