[Library Display] Women in Japanese Studies: Memoirs from a Trailblazing Generation Edited by Alisa Freedman (Feb.13, 2024-)

The book contains the memoirs of 31 North American woman scholars in Japanese studies who were pioneers in this field in the 1950s through the 1980s, when there were still not many woman scholars.

It introduces the experiences of these women, who established their careers in Japanese studies at a time when it was difficult to balance university and research work with family life.

Readers will learn what it was like for non-Japanese scholars and students to study and conduct research at Japanese universities in the postwar period—a cultural and social environment vastly different from those with which they were familiar. Several contributors are members of the I-House and there are frequent references to I-House and the Library as important venues to exchange information and receive support for their research.
