Oppenheimer, a biopic about the “father of the atomic bomb,” swept the 2024 Academy Awards, winning seven prizes, including best picture. In September 1960, just 15 years after the end of World War II, the International House of Japan became the first to invite Dr. Robert Oppenheimer to Japan. During his three-week stay in the country, he gave lectures and had discussions with many Japanese experts. He also traveled around the country, visiting Kamakura, Nikko, Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka, and gained familiarity with traditional Japanese culture.
The Library is displaying various books by and about Oppenheimer, an issue of the I-House Bulletin that describes the lecture on “Science and Culture” that he delivered at I-House, along with such artifacts as his itinerary in Japan and newspaper articles during the time of his visit.
