Since the emergence of AI (artificial intelligence) in the 1950s, our lives have changed dramatically in step with its technological evolution. It is no exaggeration to say that the age of AI has finally arrived, with the interactive AI chatbot ChatGPT—released in November last year—reaching 100 million monthly users in just two months. Without AI, we may no longer be able to adequately identify solutions to the various social issues we currently face, such as economic inequality and other social disparities, the rise of geopolitical risks, global environmental issues, and population aging.

While the evolution of AI holds tremendous promise for humanity, this does not mean it will be able to provide all the answers. Neither can privacy and ethical issues it raises be neglected. What uniquely human abilities, sensibilities, ethical values, and worldviews will remain beyond the scope of AI? How should we teach and nurture our children, and how should we ourselves assure our own learning?

Yuichiro Anzai is a pioneer in AI research, a leading expert in cognitive science, and a leader in educational reforms ranging from information utilization skills to the cultivation of social skills, having served as chair of MEXT’s Central Council for Education and chair of the Cabinet Office’s Council for AI Strategy. At the special lecture “On the Future of Education in the Age of AI,” he will discuss how the relationship between AI and human learning is likely to unfold in the years ahead.
