I-House will welcome art historian Sophie Richard in May, when the garden will be gleaming with a coat of fresh verdure.
After the lecture, there will be a reception with drinks and refreshments. We hope you will take this opportunity to meet with fellow members.
Since 2010, Sophie Richard has been researching art museums in Japan, visiting countless sites around the archipelago and interviewing museum directors and curators in each.
Her latest book,The art lover’s guide to Japanese museums, features over 100 museums ranging from large venues designed by world-renowned architects to treasure houses that remain little-known.
Sophie will discuss the motivations behind her research and share insight on the rich and multifaceted world of Japanese museums, which remains very dynamic today. She will present her most recent research on the occasion of this lecture, telling the story of selected museums while offering an outlook on Japan’s museum landscape.
Born in Provence and educated at the Ecole du Louvre and the Sorbonne in Paris, Sophie Richard has been travelling to Japan for the past 18 years. Passionate about Japanese arts and culture, she set out to explore the country’s many museums. Her first book on the subject was published in 2014 and was subsequently translated into Japanese. Her second book The art lovers’ guide to Japanese museums was published in 2019. Sophie has been a contributor to Japanese television programs on NHK and BS 11 and she is currently producing a series of video interviews under the title Encounters with Japan. She is an advisor to Bunkacho.
In 2015 her work was recognised by the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan and she received the Commissioner’s Award.
