As you may know, we hold members-only events to which a distinguished member is invited as a guest. Our featured guest in November, when the I-House garden becomes awash in autumn colors, will be gardener Chisao Shigemori.
The I-House garden was designed by Jihei Ogawa VII, a Kyoto landscape architect regarded as a pioneer of modern Japanese gardens, when the site served as the residence of Koyata Iwasaki. The estate was almost completely destroyed by air raids during World War II, though, and the garden laid in ruins when the I-House building was constructed following the war. With the world once again entering an era of upheaval, what role can Japanese gardens play in society? This lecture, on the eve of the ninetieth anniversary of the death of Jihei Ogawa, will explore the future of Japanese gardens with Chisao Shigemori, who supervises the I-House garden today.
The discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a reception.
Chisao Shigemori is the supervising gardener at I-House who knows every nook and cranny of the beautiful grounds that he helps maintain in perfect condition. He has been engaged in designing Kyoto-style gardens throughout Japan and also in broadly communicating their aesthetic appeal. He is the grandson of famed gardener Mirei Shigemori.
